Salt and Light...

When you read through Matthew chapter 5 there is a passage right after the sermon we call the beatitudes. Verses 13-16, paint a beautiful picture of who we as believers have been created to be. In a moment we'll read it together, but first I want to give a little more context. Let's look a little more into the significance of salt.

Salt has many symbolic meanings within the Bible. Some of the meanings include: purification, permanence, commitment, loyalty, God's relationship with His people, as well as desolation. Salt was used to form a covenant between God and his people as well as a reminder of ceremonial offerings. Salt was added to grain offerings within the tabernacle as a way to symbolize the fellowship between God and his people. Salt could also be used as a disinfectant and to purify. It is restorative, it was even used to mark borders. This next one is what I want to focus on.

Salt was used for preservation, it would preserve food and allow people to travel and develop trade. Along with these things, salt has so many important functions within the human body. Before we talk more about this, let's read the passage together,

"You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. You are the light of the world-like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house." -Mark 5:13-15

Since we are the salt of the earth as followers of Christ, we are meant to enhance the world. We add flavor and draw out the blessings provided by God. That's where the preservation comes in. Just as salt was used to preserve food we were made to preserve the Word of God. The passage continues with verse 16,

"In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly father." - Mark 5:16

See salt preserves goodness and quality of life, enhancing the taste of life and reminding us of God's covenant with Israel and us. The verse also says we are the light of the world. Light provides guidance and draws people in. Seeking to grow closer to God. Light is a reminder of God's wisdom and righteousness.

Being salt and light means allowing our lives to preserve the goodness and faithfulness of our God. While living in a way that showcases the gospel. Preserve God's Word and let your life reflect who our God is.

Much love friends,

Alianna
